Oklahoma takes second as Schlick, Barber tie for third in Hurricane Invite

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Oklahoma women’s golf finished second (17-under 847) and sophomores Isabelle Schlick and Savannah Barber (8-under 208) tied for third at the Hurricane Invitational at Biltmore Golf Course on Tuesday.

The Sooners recorded rounds of 275-288-284 and their opening tally was the lowest team score of the tournament. OU recorded the second-most birdies, tallying 58 and finishing six behind tournament winner Miami. The runner-up accomplishment was the first top-two finish since OU tied for second at the 2020 Schooner Fall Classic.

“As a team, I’m proud of our effort this week,” said Oklahoma head women’s golf coach Veronqiue Drouin-Luttrell. “It’s not easy to play with the lead groups but we handled the pressure pretty well. We closed out the fall season on a high note and will carry the momentum into the offseason. Our team has shown glimpses of our potential and it is exciting to continue to develop different areas with our players.”

Barber tallied rounds of 71-72 on Monday and concluded the two-day tournament with a 7-under 65, recording seven birdies and moving up 17 spots. The Fort Worth, Texas, product tallied the best third-round score in the field. Barber opened her final round with back-to-back birdies and improved to 6-under through her first 11 holes. She gained a stroke on the 18th hole and concluded her round with consecutive pars. Barber finished the tournament with 16 birdies, tying for the second most by an individual.

“Savannah had a great final round and has been battling for us all semester,” said Drouin-Luttrell. “She’s been putting in a lot of time and effort since her freshman year and it’s paying off for her.”

Schlick tallied rounds of 66-71-71 and recorded her first top-5 finish in the Crimson and Cream. Schlick started the round with a par on her first hole and dropped a stroke on the second. The Bad Homburg, Germany, product responded with a birdie on the third hole and gained two strokes on the sixth and seventh, finishing the front nine 2-under 34. After a two-stroke setback on the 15th, Schlick ended her round with a birdie on the 18th. Schlick tallied the fourth-most birdies (14) in the field.

Sophomore Gracie Mayo concluded the tournament with a 2-over 74 and tallied rounds of 65-76-74, tying for 21st with a 1-under 215. Mayo recorded a pair of birdies in the third round, moving to 1-under on the second hole and concluding her round with a birdie on 18.

Freshman Emily Hun recorded rounds of 73-71-74 and tied for 31st (2-over 218). Hun tallied birdies on the fifth and 18th holes. Junior Reagan Chaney tied for 48th (8-over 224), tallying rounds of 75-74-75. Chaney recorded four birdies in the third round.

Sophomore Raychel Nelke competed as an individual and tied for 38th (4-over 220), finishing the tournament with back-to-back 72s. Nelke tallied four birdies in the final round.
