Oklahoma team takes lead in PGA Jr. League national championship

The Battle Creek All Stars representing Oklahoma shot a combined 26-under par to take the lead after the first day of competition in the National Car Rental PGA Jr. League National Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Connecticut and Florida are tied for second at 24-under-par and North Carolina is in fourth in the 11-team field at 21-under. The top four teams after Saturday’s second round will advance to the finals Sunday, where the semifinals and finals will be match play. The format for the first two days consists of two-person scrambles with the top three scores counted and the fourth thrown out.

After shooting 10-under in the morning round to be in third place four shots behind Connecticut and Florida, Oklahoma’s squad blazed its way to 16-under in the afternoon. Porter Hart and Chase Hughes led the way, shooting 6-under in nine holes. Emerson Majma and Chase Jones shot 5-under, as did Banks Cozby and Ainslie Stanford. Harrison Shaw and Evyn Cannon shot a fine 3-under that was not counted.
