EDMOND (Oct. 1) – Susana Oliveras fired a 3-under-par 68 to rally for the individual title and propel Central Oklahoma to the championship of its own tournament Tuesday as the Bronchos captured the UCO Golf Classic.
UCO knocked 11 shots off its first-round score, closing with a 295 to finish two trips around the wind-swept 5,976-yard, par-71 Golf Club of Edmond with a 601 total. That was good for a seven-shot win over runner-up Arkansas Tech, which started the day with a two-stroke lead over the Bronchos.
Central Missouri was third in the 17-team tournament at 613, followed by Tarleton State (619) and Southwestern Oklahoma (630).
Sydney Roberts also came up big for Central with a final-round 72, while Faith Stewart shot 77, Madison O’Dell 79 and Emma Shelley 81. Kinsley Hall shot 80 and Arin Zachary 82 playing as individual medalists.
“It’s been a while since we’ve been in this position and I’m really proud of the girls for the way they finished,” said head coach Michael Bond, whose team won their first tournament in two years. “It wasn’t easy out there with the wind and we played well. Susana really played lights out and it’s just really impressive how she responded after her start yesterday.
“This team has been working hard and we’ve made a lot of improvement already this year. Hopefully this will give us a boost the rest of the fall.”
Oliveras opened the tournament Monday with a nine on the par-4 first hole before rallying to shot a 75, leaving her tied for sixth in the medalist race. The freshman sensation knocked six shots off her first-hole score to start Tuesday’s final round, making the first of her six birdies on the day.
Oliveras bogeyed No. 5 to drop back to even-par, but then birdied Nos. 6, 7 and 9 to make the turn at three-under 34. She notched another birdie on No. 12, offset a bogey on No. 15 with a 15-foot birdie putt on No. 16 and then bogeyed No. 17 before finishing with a par.
That enabled Oliveras to finish the tournament with a one-over 143 total, leaving her six shots clear of runner-up Junie Khaw of Tarleton State in winning her first collegiate tournament after finishes of fourth and 10th in UCO’s opening two events of the fall season.
Roberts started her day on No. 3 and was two-over after four holes. She birdied No. 9 to get back to one-over, dropped a stroke at No. 11 and then birdied Nos. 12, 13 and 14 to get to one-under for the day.
The senior standout followed with four straight pars, then doubled bogeyed No. 1 and parred No. 2 to finish off a 72 that tied as the second-lowest score of the day. Roberts tied for sixth individually with a 151 total.
Stewart ended up 11th in medalist standings at 153 and O’Dell tied for 12th at 154.
UCO continues its fall schedule next Monday and Tuesday at the UCM Midwest Classic in Warrensburg, Mo.
