OSU opens spring season hot in Hawaii, Auburn fires near-record 32-under
KOHALA COAST, Hawaii – Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team opened play at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate on Thursday with a 267 to stand in a tie for fourth place at Mauna Lani’s North Course.
The Cowboys’ 21-under tally tied them with Texas Tech and put them two shots out of third place, which is held by Arizona State, at the par-72, 6,913-yard layout.
It’s not often a team shoots 21 under in the first round and trails by 11. Auburn shot a jaw-dropping 32-under, setting a program record and nearly an NCAA all-time record, trailing only Lipscomb’s 33-under at the Streamsong Invitational in 2022.
The No. 5 Tigers lead the tournament by five strokes over Stanford. Junior All-American Jackson Koivun shot a 10-under 62 and even that wasn’t good enough for the individual lead. He is in second and trails the leader Mahanth Chirravuri of Pepperdine (61) by one.
A pair of Cowboys fired opening 65s to share ninth place with juniors Preston Stout and Gaven Lane each carding 7-under scores on the day.
For the third year in a row, Stout got out of the gate quickly at the event. In each of the past two years, the All-American has fired a 62 to open the event and match the school’s 18-hole scoring mark. Over those 54 holes, Stout has tallied 24 birdies and two eagles against just one bogey.
Junior Eric Lee finished the day tied for 28th place at 4-under 68, while sophomore Filip Fahlberg-Johnsson was a stroke back with a 69 to tie for 42nd place.
Junior Ethan Fang rounded out the starting five with a 73 to stand in a tie for 92nd place.
Redshirt freshman Collin Bond is competing individually and carded a 68 of his own to open play.
The Cowboys will begin their second round Friday at 11:30 a.m. (CST) and will be grouped with Hawaii-Hilo, Auburn and Arizona State.
