OU’s Welch, OSU’s Chacarra are co Big 12 Golfers of the Month
IRVING, Texas – Oklahoma State’s Eugenio Chacarra and Oklahoma’s Patrick Welch were named the co Big 12 Golfer of the Month for February it was announced today by the league office.
Chacarra, a native of Madrid, Spain, opened the month with his first victory as a Cowboy at the Amer Ari Invitational in Hawaii after firing a 19-under total of 197. He posted rounds of 67 and 68 before matching the school record with a closing 62. He would eagle his final hole to propel OSU to a one-shot win in the team race as well.
Chacarra signed for scores of 68, 69 and 65 to finish with an 8-under 202 total at the Gators Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. His finish helped the Cowboys to a runner-up showing in the team race.
The senior finished in sole possession of ninth place in OSU’s most recent outing at the Cabo Collegiate after posting a 9-under 204 tally with scores of 67, 68 and 69.
Chacarra finished the month with a stroke average of 67.0 and moved up to No. 3 in the PGA Tour University rankings.
Welch rattled off back-to-back career-low 202s (-14) at the Puerto Rico Classic and the Southern Highlands Collegiate. His performance gave him the individual title at Southern Highlands and a T6 finish in Puerto Rico.
The win at SHGC in Las Vegas was the first 54-hole tournament win pf his college career, but his second overall victory after winning the 2020 East Lake Cup. Welch, an honorable mention All-American as a freshman, posted a school-record 10-under par 62 to open the Puerto Rico Classic and owned a scoring average of 67.33 for the month.
With his medalist honor, Welch earned an invitation to the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, which will take place Oct. 6-9, 2022, at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas.
Welch led the No. 1-ranked Sooners to a pair of wins in February to open the spring slate, giving Oklahoma its third consecutive win and fourth win of the year. The three straight wins made OU just the third program in NCAA history to win three straight events in a season.
The Sooners will look to make it four straight victories March 18-19 when they travel to Tucson, Ariz., for the Men’s NIT. Oklahoma finished as the runner-up at the 2021 NIT.
