The University of Oklahoma women’s golf team finished Sunday’s first round of the 12-team Jim West Challenge in sixth place by shooting a 305 (+17) in San Antonio, Texas. The 6,234-yard, par-72 Tapatio Springs Golf Club is the host course for the tournament.

The Sooners, who are competing in their last event of the fall season, are eight strokes behind leader and No. 22-ranked Texas A&M (+9). Second-place Missouri finished the round at +13 and East Carolina, Houston and Texas Tech are tied for third place at +15.

Freshman Ana Ruiz, OU’s top finisher the last two tournaments, led the Sooners with a 74 (+2) Sunday and is tied for fifth place out of 69 competitors. Ruiz recorded two birdies and four bogeys.

Fellow OU freshman Hannah Wood and sophomore Alexandra Kaui each recorded a 76 (+4) and share 18th place. Kaui’s round featured a team-high four birdies.

OU sophomore Maggie Neece is tied for 36th place after shooting a 79 (+7) and freshman Rylee Pedigo carded an 83 (+11), good for a 58th-place tie.

Sooner Amanda Johnson is playing as an individual in the event and is unattached from team scoring. The sophomore is in 67th place after shooting an 86 (+14).

Teams will play the second and third rounds of the tournament Monday due to expected inclement weather on Tuesday. Sixth-year OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said her team is looking forward to Monday’s rounds.

“The course played tough today,” Drouin-Luttrell said. “We are playing 36 holes tomorrow due to inclement weather they are calling for on Tuesday, so we need to work on a few things tonight to get ready for tomorrow. Our game plan is good and we just need to stick to it and play with confidence.”

The Sooners will tee off in the second round of the tournament Monday at 8 a.m. CT with a shotgun start. The third round will immediately follow. Live stats are available at BirdieFire.com.
