NORMAN — Oklahoma men’s golfer Ben Lorenz was named the Big 12’s Golfer of the Month for March, it was announced Tuesday afternoon by the league.

Lorenz, a junior from Peoria, Ariz., has pieced together the best stretch of golf in his college career over the last month, earning his first collegiate victory at The Goodwin and a T10 finish at the Men’s NIT. The accolade marks the first of his Oklahoma career.

The Sooner opened his month with a 10th-place finish at the NIT, where he fired three rounds of 2-under 70 at Omni Tucson National Golf Club to defeat 17 golfers ranked inside the nation’s top 100. He followed that performance with a career-low 201 (-9) to win The Goodwin at TPC Harding Park by two strokes. His victory at The Goodwin was pivotal in the Sooners’ team win at the 28-team event.

Lorenz was Oklahoma’s first medalist of the 2022-23 campaign, but the Sooners have now won three events as a team, tied for the third-most in program history. Lorenz and the Sooners have won 11 of their last 20 tournaments dating back to the beginning of last season. He becomes the 10th Sooner golfer of the Hybl era, which started in 2009, to win a Big 12 Golfer of the Month accolade. Eight of the previous nine Hybl golfers to earn the distinction posted at least one All-American season at Oklahoma.
