NORMAN —  Touted as one of the nation’s top golfers, Oklahoma redshirt senior Patrick Welch is set to compete in the third annual PXG College Golf Showcase at Scottsdale National in Scottsdale, Ariz. Welch is the third Sooner to play in the event, joining Garett Reband (2020) and Logan McAllister (2021).

The event premiers on GOLF Channel at 6 p.m. on Dec. 14 as Welch competes with five of the country’s best men’s and women’s golfers and Pro Football Hall of Famers Jerome Bettis and Brian Urlacher. During the 18-hole competition, the telecast will raise awareness and critical funds for the Semper Fi & America’s Fund and Mount Sinai Hospital’s Center for Psychedelic Psychotherapy and Trauma Research.

“It means a lot to be asked to play in the PXG Showcase,” Welch said. “To see two of my former teammates compete in this event the last two years and to have the opportunity to compete in it as well makes it that much better.”

Welch, a three-time All-America honoree for the Sooners, has orchestrated one of the best careers as an Oklahoma golfer. The Aliso Viejo, Calif., product owns three of the school’s lowest 15 single-season scoring averages and his career average of 71.45 ranks fifth in Oklahoma history. Welch won the 2020 East Lake Cup and the 2022 Southern Highlands Collegiate, earning his first PGA TOUR start at the Shriners Children’s Open, where he finished T28.

The Sooner is a three-time member of the Big 12 All-Tournament team and has amassed over 20 top-20 finishes in his college career. He closed the 2022 fall slate ranked No. 8 in the PGA TOUR University ranking presented by Velocity Global, which would ensure him pro status following his collegiate career.

At the made-for-television event, players are split into two four-person teams: two male college golfers, one female college golfer and their celebrity team captain. Teams will matchup in a skins shootout with a new format every six holes, including scramble, team aggregate and alternate shot, with the purse of $1,000,000 spread across the 18 holes.

“We are very excited to continue this unique event with PXG and Scottsdale National Golf Club. The updated format is going to further spotlight these great college athletes who in the very near future will be competing on the PGA and LPGA Tours,” said Drew Carr of Fidelity Sports Group. “2022 is the third year of the event since our launch during COVID and to have helped distribute a total of $3 million dollars to veteran focused foundations while also uplifting the profile of college golf’s best players, coaches and programs is an accomplishment we are all very proud of and an endeavor we plan to continue for many years to come.”

Head coach Ryan Hybl will join Welch at the event. Rachel Kuehn (Wake Forest) and Erica Shepherd (Duke), and men’s college golfers Bryce Lewis (Tennessee), Reid Davenport (Vanderbilt) and Max Moldovan (Ohio State) are the other featured college golfers.
