Phillips wins qualifier for Senior Professional National Championship
MONKEY ISLAND, Oklahoma – Tracy Phillips continued his torrid play over the past several years, shooting a final round of 7-under 65 to win the South Central PGA Section Senior Professional Championship Tuesday at Shangri-La Resort.
Phillips, the director of instruction at Cedar Ridge Country Club in Broken Arrow, will lead a group of six section professionals into the 26th Senior PGA Professional National Championship Nov. 13-16 at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Phillips and Jim Woodward of Edmond, who won the event in 2012, were previously exempt.
Joining them at the Senior Professional will be Mark Fuller of The Golf Club at Surrey Hills, first-round leader Pat McTigue of GolfTec, Jim Kane of The Folds of Honor Foundation and Jeff Combe of Tulsa Country Club.
The Senior PGA Professional National Championship brings together a field of 264 contestants representing The PGA of America’s 41 nationwide Sections, and features a total purse of $285,000 on both courses over the first two rounds: PGA Golf Club’s Ryder and Wanamaker Courses. The Wanamaker Course will host the final 36 holes.
The top 35 finishers in the national championship earn a berth in the 76th Senior PGA Championship which will be conducted May 21-24, 2015, at the French Lick (Ind.) Resort.
The top five finishers earn an exemption into the final stage of the 2014 Champions Tour National Finals. Since its debut, many participants in the Senior PGA Professional National Championship have used their success in the event as a springboard to a Champions Tour career.
