Pumphrey, Noonan win USGA Four-Ball qualifier at TCC
Former University of Oklahoma golfer Riley Pumphrey and former Louisiana State golfer Brian Noonan combined for seven birdies against one bogey, shooting a 6-under 64 at Tulsa Country Club Thursday to lead qualifying for the first USGA Amateur Four-Ball, scheduled in April 30-May 6 2015 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.
The two players, now both members of Austin Country Club, will be joined by Draegen Majors and Price Brooks, who shot 65, and Rick Bell and Don Cochran of Norman, who combined for a 66 and then won a playoff with Jeremy Callison and Icem Brewer, who also shot 66 and will be the first alternate.
Second alternate status goes to Michael Alsup and Chris Noel of Tulsa, who combined for a 67 and won a playoff with Wesley Harris and Jacob Oaks and the team of Zach Rowin and Patrick West. Complete results are below.
Pumphrey, who completed his OU career in 2012, said he and Noonan each played a solid round, bogeying only the par-3 17th. The two were 3 under after five holes and birdied holes 12, 13 and 14 in succession.
Noonan birdied both the 220-yard par-3 ninth and the 225-yard par-3 14th.
“That was like stealing a couple,” Pumphrey said.
The U.S. Amateur Four-Ball is a new event that replaces the USGA Mid-Amateur.
