RSU claims Tulsa Cup title, SWOSU’s Phillips closes fast for individual crown
BROKEN ARROW, Okla. – Rogers State edged Washburn by two shots and Southwestern Oklahoma State by six at the conclusion of a wind-swept Tulsa Cup at Indian Springs Country Club.
“Wow, what a win,” said RSU coach Steve Brown. “This tournament pretty much sums up why games and tournaments are held; anything can happen. We just hung in there until the end. Honestly, the guys really played solid in some pretty brutal conditions. If you don’t play golf, then you have no idea how mentally exhausting playing 54 holes is in 45 mph winds.”
After three rounds at the par 72, 6,893 course, the Hillcats won the tournament with a card of 907 (+43). Washburn finished two back, while SWOSU closed hard, led by individual winner Jack Phillips, who birdied five holes on his final nine to shoot 2-under 70 and finished at even par for the 54 holes. That was good for a two-shot victory over teammate Jesse Rouse at 2 over. RSU’s Elliott Han Montermal tied for third at 4 over.
“I’m just so proud of the guys for really coming together as a team.,” continued Brown. “Everyone contributed to this victory, either with their play, or with their support and attitude. I can’t say enough about Elliot’s 68 today. Four-under-par in these conditions is incredible. But, without Tyler’s even par first round, or Jack’s 2-over-final round, which were also outstanding, we simply don’t win this tournament. Today was a great day to be a Hillcat, for sure.”
Elliot-Han Monteremal led RSU in a tie for third place after shooting 220 (+4) for the tournament, including an outstanding 68 (-4) in the final, bogey-free round. The senior sank eight birdies across the 54 holes.
Jack Roche finished in a tie for 15th with a card of 226 (+10). Tyler Collier finished in a tie for 20th with a 229 (+13). Callum Brown finished in a group of eight tied at 28th with a 232 (+16). Kaden Armstrong rounded out the group in 87th with a 253 (+37).
For SWOSU, Phillips claimed his first win of the season. Phillips was among the top of many statistics by the end of the tournament. He finished top three in average par 3 scoring at 3.00, while also leading the way with teammate Conrado Diaz Ermacora in par 4 average score at 4.00. His 10 birdies also tied for the most of any golfer in the field.
Diaz Ermacora has improved his tournament finishes in every event so far this year, leading to his first top five placing highlighted by a 71 (-1) in round two. While leading with Phillips for average par 4 score, Ermacora added seven birdies through the three rounds to cap off his fall season on a strong note.
Lucas Vidal finished at +18 after the three rounds. He had six birdies, and his best round came in the opening frame of the tournament with a +3 (75) which was highlighted by two birdies on the front nine.
Mariano Racca (+32) in his first tournament for the Dawgs along with Ryan Carlisle (+32) closed it out for the Bulldogs, each finished with three birdies on their scorecards.
