Sooners climb into third, TU slides to 10th in Oak Hills Invitational
The No. 16 Oklahoma men’s golf team climbed three spots in the final round to take third place out of 15 teams at the UTSA/Oak Hills Invitational in San Antonio, Texas. The two-day, 54-hole tournament was played at the 6,765-yard, par-71 Oak Hills Country Club.
The Sooners began the day in sixth place at 17 over par before firing a 2-over-par 286 on Tuesday, bringing their three-round total to 871 (+19).
"Today was definitely much better, but we are still not where we need to be," sixth-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "We have a long way to go, and it was evident this week with how poorly we played across the board. It is time to get back to work to figure it out. We need to be tougher and better short gamers."
Eighth-ranked Baylor, coached by former Oklahoma State coach Mike McGraw, claimed the tournament title, finishing with an 850 (-2), while host school UTSA was the runner-up with a 14-over-par 866. North Texas placed fourth at 24 over par, and Wichita State and Houston Baptist tied for fifth with scores of 877 (+25). Kyle Jones of Baylor finished first individually with a 205 (-8).
Senior Michael Gellerman led OU with a 215 (+2), including an even-par 71 for the final 18 holes. Gellerman, who pocketed three birdies on Monday and nine total for the event, claimed a share of eighth place, his third top-10 showing of the season.
With a 219 (+6), freshman Grant Hirschman tied for 24th place, while sophomore Max McGreevy finished in a tie for 34th place with a 222 (+9). Hirschman shot a 3-over-par 74 in the final round, and McGreevy posted a 78 (+7).
Both junior Beau Titsworth and senior Charlie Saxon recorded their best rounds of the tournament on Tuesday with a 68 (-4) and 73 (+2), respectively. Titsworth’s 68 was nine strokes better than his previous low this week, and his three-round 224 (+11) tied him for 42nd place. Saxon tied for 45th with a 225 (+12).
Playing as an individual, Luke Kwon took a share of 29th place with a 220 (+7). The junior shot a 6-over-par 76 to close out the tournament.
The Sooners return to the course Feb. 22-24 (Sunday-Tuesday) as they head to Rio Grande, P.R., for the Puerto Rico Classic.
