NORMAN – Oklahoma women’s golf won The Match Play at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club, defeating Tulsa 3-1-1 in the championship match and winning its first tournament title since the 2018 Clover Cup.

The Sooners advanced to the championship match with a 2-1-2 victory over Texas Tech in the semifinals. Junior Reagan Chaney beat Cameron Freund 4 and 2 and sophomore Savannah Barber claimed the 3 and 2 victory over Klara Hurtova. Sophomore Gracie Mayo and senior Nina Lang tied Lauren Zaretsky and Kylee Loewe, respectively. Sophomore Isabelle Schlick dropped her match, falling to Gala Domez by a single hole.

“I’m proud of our player’s tireless work to get the tournament victory,” said Oklahoma head women’s golf coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. “The win validates their belief in our system. This is a huge team effort that includes our coaches and support staff who help our players every day.”

In the finals, Lang dominated her match against Tulsa’s Jenni Roller, earning the 4 and 3 victory. She opened a commanding lead and held a four-hole advantage through seven. Roller battled back, winning the eighth and 10th holes. Lang claimed the 12th and 14th holes before ending the match with an even finish on the 15th.

Mayo recorded a 1-up victory over Lovisa Gunnar and Barber secured the match with a 2 and 1 win over Sydney Seigel.

Through 11 holes, Barber and Siegel were all square. The Fort Worth, Texas product won the 12th hole and improved to 2-up with a victory on the 14th. Seigel narrowed the deficit to one with a win on the 15th hole before Barber drained a long putt attempt on the 17th, earning the 2&1 victory and team title for the Sooners.

“We’ve been close with multiple runner-up finishes this season and it feels amazing to win a tournament,” said Drouin-Luttrell. “Postseason is on the horizon, and we hope that this victory gave us the confidence needed to play at this level.”

Schlick and Grace Kilcrease needed all 18 holes and finished the contest tied. Despite being down two on the 14th hole, Schlick won the 15th and 16th, moving the match back to even. The two went shot-for-shot on the final two holes.

Tulsa’s Allyn Stephens claimed the lone Golden Hurricane victory, earning the 2 and 1 victory over Chaney.

Oklahoma State split its pair of matches on Tuesday, falling to No. 5 Kansas State, 3-2-0, and defeating No. 6 Tulane, 3-0-2.

The Cowgirls finished 1-2 overall at the par-72, 6,512-yard layout with all five players notching a match-play win. Fifth-year golfers Ashton Begley and Jenna Solheim also concluded action competing individually at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic, with Begley notching a top-10 finish and both setting career lows.

Oklahoma State earned a pair of wins against the Wildcats as Ellie Bushnell and Angelica Pfefferkorn managed their matches. Bushnell stacked a four-hole lead through six holes and held on for a 4UP victory, while Angelica Pfefferkorn took an edge after four holes and never lost the lead – defeating Noa van Beek, 2&1.

The Cowgirls faltered a trio of matches in morning play, with Thitaporn Saithip falling 4 and 3 to Julia Ballester Barrio and Marta Silchenko and Sammie Miller dropping matches 6 up to Carla Bernat and Haley Vargas, respectively.

Bernat joined Cowgirl senior Maddison Hinson-Tolchard in ANWA’s 72-player field last week, reaching the final cut and finishing top-20 in the prestigious event.

After lightning struck within an eight-mile radius of the course, the eight-team field endured a one-hour delay before final-round action commenced between the Cowgirls and No. 6 Tulane.

Saithip struck the board first for OSU, downing Miriam Emmert, 2 up, after trailing after the front nine. Shortly after, Miller earned her first match-play win as a Cowgirl, downing Matilde Innocenti, 3 and 1.

Bushnell and Pfefferkorn starred to close the final round as with both trailing one hole, they carded birdies on hole No. 13 to knot their respective matches in ties against Daozeng Liu and Ruhee Pandit.

In the final match of the day, Marta Silchenko notched the Cowgirls’ closing point in a nail biting 1UP finish. Silchenko never trailed during her match, but Julia Sanchez Morales didn’t make the win easy as the freshman’s lead peaked at two holes.

In their final regular-season tournament, Begley and Solheim saved their best for last in Oklahoma City.

Begley earned her second-career top-10 finish, ending the three-round tournament tied for 8th with rounds of 74-76-74 – 224, while Solheim closed Tuesday with a career-low 84 round to finish tied for 46th at 92-96-84 – 272.

The day marked career-low 54-hole scores for the pair in addition to Solheim’s best placement as a Cowgirl.

Next up, the Sooners and Cowgirls head to Hockley, Texas, for the Big 12 Championship from April 18-20 at The Club at Houston Oaks.Tulsa will be back in action at the American Athletic Conference Championship, April 15-17, at the Southern Hills Plantation Club in Brooksville, Fla.
