Stevens stays hot with 63 to grab early lead in Oklahoma Open
Former Oklahoma State golfer Sam Stevens continued his torrid charge through the mini-tour ranks with an opening 7-under 63 Thursday to take a one-shot lead in the Oklahoma Open at Oak Tree Country Club in Edmond.
Stevens, who now lives in Eastborough, Kan., has dominated the All Pro Tour the past two seasons and also played well in PGA Tour Latin America events. He was a member of the OSU team that won the national championship in 2018, but he, Hayden Wood and Brendon Jelley, all future professionals, were not able to crack the post-season lineup on that powerful squad that featured Viktor Hovland and Matthew Wolff.
Two players who were in the starting lineup for OSU as it thrashed Alabama 5-0 to win the NCAA Championship – Austin Eckroat and Zach Bauchou – each shot 66 in the opening round and are just three shots behind Stevens. Wood shot 69.
Wyatt Worthingon II of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, is alone in second with a 64. Recent Oklahoma grad Quade Cummins and amateur Brock Polhill of Edmond are in a group at 65 that includes Zach James of Whitesboro, Texas, Josh Radcliff of Grapevine, Texas and Christian Jalomo or Richmond, Texas.
Gil Morgan, who won this event in 1981 and 1997, likely before any of the other competitors were born in both cases, shot 2-over 72, 2 strokes under his age of 74.
The tournament continues with 18 holes Friday, after which the field will be cut to the low 40 and ties for the final round Saturday.
