Summy, Fang share medalist honors as OSU takes second, Sooners third in Carmel Cup
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Jase Summy delivered a memorable performance on Sunday, storming back to claim co-medalist honors at the season-opening Carmel Cup at Spyglass Hill Golf Club.
The senior from Keller, Texas, entered the final round four shots off the lead but fired a 6-under 66 to finish at 11-under for the week and share the title with Walker Cup teammate Ethan Fang of Oklahoma State.
As a team, No. 5/8 Oklahoma posted the low round of the day with an 8-under 352, climbing into a tie for third at 11-under. The Sooners have now finished in the top five in 11 of their last 12 regular season events.
A final-round rally by Oklahoma State came up just short as the Cowboys finished second at Spyglass Hill Golf Course. The top-ranked Cowboys entered the final round of play 15 shots behind Vanderbilt before posting a 7-under 353 at the par-72, 6,975-yard layout to ultimately finish three shots off the pace of the Commodores.
OSU wrapped up the event with a 14-under total of 1,066. Arkansas and Oklahoma shared third place at 1,069.
With the finish, OSU saw its winning streak come to an end at five in a row, but has now finished first or second in 11 of its last 12 starts.
A preseason All-American and the world’s No. 5-ranked amateur, Summy played the back nine bogey-free at 5-under to chase down Fang and secure the third win of his career. He now trails only Anthony Kim (5), Logan McAllister (4, including one at the Carmel Cup) and Grant Hirschman (4) on OU’s all-time wins list.
Summy signed for rounds of 69-70-66, highlighted by a tournament-best 19 birdies. The victory extended a remarkable six-month stretch that includes six top-10 finishes, collegiate wins at the Maridoe Intercollegiate and Carmel Cup, a championship at the Western Amateur, a run to the Round of 32 at the U.S. Amateur and a fourth-place finish in the Elite Amateur Series. He also earned selections to represent the United States in both the Walker Cup and Palmer Cup. For his OU career, he now owns 41 rounds in the 60s, 17 top-20 finishes, 13 top-10s and nine top-five showings.
Fang began the day in third place and just a shot out of the lead before closing with a 69 to finish at 205. Fang and Summy, who squared off this summer in the title match at the Western Amateur, shared medalist honors, giving Fang his first career victory.
