The PGA Tour: Advocating for responsible gambling

When it comes to promoting gambling, sports companies have a responsibility to protect the people who may see the promotions. They must comply with rules and regulations around brand sponsorships and advertising, such as, for instance, not allowing the logos of gambling companies on merchandise for use by children. Whether they’re advertising a real money online casino or other products and services, it’s important to promote them in a responsible manner and encourage safe use of the subject of the advertising.

One organization that has taken action to promote responsible gambling has been the PGA. Below is a look at the initiative, at why the golfing association has gotten involved, who else is taking part in the initiative and how being part of it benefits them.

PGA Tour joins responsible gambling initiatives

The PGA Tour has become big on promoting responsible gambling and has joined a voluntary association of sports companies and media entities who are all committed to promoting a responsible approach to sports betting advertising. The coalition is called the Coalition for Responsible Sports Betting Advertising and was formed last year by the NFL and Fox. At the same time, the Tour also renewed its position within the Leadership Circle of the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG).

At the time of the Tour’s incorporation into the association, Scott Warfield, the organization’s vice president, Gaming, stated, “With the proliferation of sports betting in the United States, the PGA TOUR remains committed to establishing a safe and healthy marketplace for consumers.”

As part of the Tour’s mission, the organization seeks to educate fans on gambling responsibly and on the sources available to address problem gambling issues. In a joint statement with the other members of the coalition, the Tour also expressed how that, as legalized sports betting spread across America, it felt there was a need to establish guardrails around how sports betting should be advertised to consumers in the United States.

Responsible Gaming Education Month (RGEM)

A few months after joining the coalition, the Tour launched another initiative in September 2024. The Tour has made a public service announcement that features “Sam the Responsible Gaming Caddie,” who takes punters through essential reminders for safe gaming, from setting a budget, to not chasing losses and to only ever placing bets on reputable websites.

Earlier in the year, in May 2024, the PGA America had partnered up with the American Gaming Association (AGA) on its “Have a Game Plan – Bet Responsibly” campaign, another public service campaign to promote responsible sports wagering. As part of the campaign, PGA of America agreed to feature co-branded content on responsible gaming, educational material and strategic activations across its digital and social media platforms. The Tour’s “Sam the Responsible Gaming Caddie” supports this initiative.

The plan itself unites legal gaming operators, sports teams, leagues, media companies and other organizations around a core consumer education message that focus on the principles of responsible gaming:

  • Set a budget and keep to it
  • Stay social with your gaming –sports betting is a form of entertainment for adults
  • Know the odds
  • Only gamble with legal, regulated sports betting operators.

AGA have been running the initiative since 2019. The campaign provides consumers with a guide to legal operators, state by state, throughout America. As well as shining a spotlight on the basics of sports betting, the initiative raises awareness around the signs of problem betting.

Not standing alone

The PGA isn’t the only stakeholder in these initiatives. As well as the NFL and Fox, a whole host of sports companies and media entities have come together to form the Coalition for Responsible Sports Betting Advertising. The association consists of the following:

  • NBA
  • WNBA
  • NHL
  • MLB
  • MLS
  • NASCAR
  • and NBC Sports.

Taking part in these initiatives is a clear sign that these organizations about the fans, and that they’re fulfilling their obligations to the greater good of gamblers and of nongamblers who gambling may affect. Not only this, but showing support for responsible gambling and promoting it, by making consumers aware of responsible gambling basics, helps them to have a better experience when using sports betting or other gambling services.

In fact, supporting responsible gambling has become somewhat essential. Environmental, social and governance matters are becoming important for businesses to remain competitive. Consumers, and also the law, are holding them to account. If an organization or business is to accept sponsorships from gaming companies, it has a duty to look after the people it is helping to advertise these services to as well. That’s for the good of the consumers and for the good of the business.

The PGA Tour has gotten involved in the promotion of responsible gaming, especially as wagering on golf events is growing and sports betting spreads across the United States. By encouraging responsible gaming, the organization is protecting fans and, by fulfilling this duty, also enhancing its brand.
