Thompson, Hong lead OGA Junior Championship after first round
Grady Thompson, a 15-year who just completed his sophomore season at Edmond Santa Fe, fired a 6-under 64 to take a two-shot lead into the final round of the stroke play portion of the Oklahoma Golf Association Junior Championship at KickingBird Golf Course in Edmond.
Thompson leads Porter Hart of Broken Arrow after Hart fired a 4-under 66. Chase Blaser of Edmond, Banks Cozby of Tulsa, Hudson Hobbs of Ardmore and Ben Lathrop of Oklahoma City each shot 68 and are tied for third.
In the girls division, there were no surprises at the top as Norman North teammates Juliana Hong and Harlow Gregory are 1-2. Hong shot a 1-over 71 and Gregory is a stroke behind at 72. Dia Singh of Bixby and Kate Moore of Tulsa are tied for third at 73 with Megan Kalapura of Tulsa in fifth with a 74.
The object for the OGA today is to get the second round completed before expected storms begin late afternoon. The top 16 boys and girls advance to match play beginning Wednesday. The semifinals and finals are Thursday.
The field is deep but does lack Oklahoma’s three top-rated juniors per Junior Golf Scoreboard. Chase Hughes (25) of Oklahoma City and Emerson Majma (104) of Edmond as well as Lisa Herman (17) of Jenks are not in the field for various reasons. Hughes was expected to play but withdrew on Sunday evening.
