Tulsa in tie for third, Sooners, Cowgirls tied for sixth in NCAA regionals

The University of Tulsa was tied for third while Oklahoma State and Oklahoma were tied for sixth after opening round play in their respective NCAA Regionals Monday.

AUBURN, Ala. –– Tulsa women golfers finished first round play at the NCAA Auburn Regional Monday in a three-way tie for third place. The Hurricane carded a 10-over par 298 and is tied with the nation’s 14th-ranked Oregon Ducks and Houston at the par-72, 6,456-yard Auburn University Club course.

Two Tulsa golfers are among the top-10 individuals as junior Sydney Seigel shot an even-par 72 for fifth place, while sophomore Grace Kilcrease is one stroke back with an eighth-place score of 73. Seigel scored two birdies and two bogeys for her even par round. After birdies on holes 13 and 16, Kilcrease bogeyed her final two holes to go from 1-under to 1-over par for the day.

Host and seventh-ranked Auburn leads the field with a 2-over par 290, while No. 2-ranked South Carolina sits at 5-over par 293 for second place. Rounding out the 12 teams were sixth-place North Carolina (300), Miami (305), Georgia (306), East Tennessee State (308), Michigan (311), Kennesaw State (317) and Albany (321).

Tulsa junior Lovisa Gunnar carded an opening round 4-over par 76 for 26th place, while one stroke separates 34th-place Jenni Roller and 41st-place Allyn Stephens. After a first-hole triple bogey, Gunnar gathered herself and hit a birdie putt on hole No. 2. She finished with two more birdies and four bogeys on the day. Roller shot a round of 77 and Stephens carded a score of 78 after the first 18 holes.

Second round action takes place Tuesday with the final round set for Wednesday. The top-5 teams will advance to the NCAA Championship, May 17-22, at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.

Sooners tied for sixth in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS – Sophomore Savannah Barber fired a 1-under 71, and Oklahoma women’s golf tied for sixth (6-over, 294) after the Las Vegas Regional opening round.

Barber tied for sixth, leading the OU lineup. The Fort Worth, Texas, product tallied five consecutive pars before her first birdie on the sixth hole. After a bogey on the seventh, she finished the front nine even par 36. Barber dropped another stroke on the 10th hole and responded with her second birdie on the 11th. After three straight pars, she drained her third and final birdie on the 15th, moving to 1-under. Barber suffered a one-stroke setback on the 17th before a birdie on the 18th.

Sophomore Isabelle Schlick and junior Reagan Chaney are tied for 19th, firing a 1-over 73. Schlick dropped a stroke on her opening hole and moved to even after a birdie on the third hole. After a bogey on the fifth, she recorded nine consecutive pars before a one-stroke setback on the 15th hole. Schlick ended her round with a birdie on the 18th.

Chaney tallied bogeys on the second and third holes, moving to 2-over through three. She responded with a birdie on the sixth hole before a bogey on the seventh. The Ardmore, Okla., product drained a birdie on the ninth, finishing the front nine 1-over 37. Chaney tallied her third birdie in her last six holes on the 11th, moving to even. After one-stroke setbacks on the 13th and 17th holes, she was 2-over, capping her round with a birdie on the 18th.

Senior Nina Lang tied for 49th (5-over5, 77), and sophomore Gracie Mayo tied for 57th (7-over, 79).

Oklahoma is tied with Arizona, two strokes back of Baylor (4-over, 292) and three strokes back of UCLA for fourth (3-over, 291).

Cowgirls tied for sixth in East Lansing

EAST LANSING, Mich – Oklahoma State women’s golf capped opening-round action at the NCAA East Lansing Regional tied for sixth place on Monday, while Maddison Hinson-Tolchard slots tied for fourth in the field.

The Cowgirls completed the first round at Forest Akers Golf Course 3-over 291 to tie with Michigan State and enters Tuesday one shot behind Denver. USC leads the field at 7-under 281, while Pepperdine and Northwestern stand on the podium two and three shots back of the Trojans, respectively. Bailey Shoemaker of USC leads the individual leaderboard following a bogey-free 65.

The top five teams from each of the six regional sites will qualify for the NCAA Championship on May 17-22, advancing 30 team finalists to Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. In addition, the low individual not on an advancing team from each regional will also qualify.

Hinson-Tolchard paced the Cowgirls, firing a bogey-free, 2-under front nine before an even back nine closed her day at 2-under 70. The back-to-back Big 12 Player of the Year added to her list of accolades Monday, moving to 10th in the program’s career counting scores list – earning her 109th to pass Jo Jo Robertson (1995-99).

Marta Silchenko wrapped up the opening day tied for 12th after signing a 71. Silchenko led the Cowgirls with five birdies, the third-most in the 66-player field.

Ellie Bushnell carded a 2-over 74 on Monday, posting a pair of birdies during the day to tie for 34th.

Bushnell’s last birdie on hole No. 13 marked the start of a surge for the Cowgirls. On the par-5, 460-yard hole, Bushnell, Thitaporn Saithip and Silchenko each drilled successive birdies to cushion the team scorecard, moving OSU to fourth at its peak.

Saithip’s stride on No. 13 marked her last of three birdies on Monday. After opening the day with a double bogey, the sophomore re-collected, closing out at 4-over 76.  Angelica Pfefferkorn concluded the first round with an 81.

The Cowgirls return to Forest Akers Golf Course for the second round Tuesday at 7 a.m. CT. Oklahoma State will tee off on hole No. 10 with Florida and Denver.
