TU’s Thomas surges into second, state teams in middle at Schooner Fall Classic
NORMAN – Oklahoma State placed sixth, the University of Tulsa seventh and the host Oklahoma Sooners tied for eighth as the Schooner Fall Classic wrapped up Monday at Belmar Golf Club. Tulsa’s Lilly Thomas carded a 4-under par 66 in the final round to finish one-stroke behind individual medalist Morgan Ketchum of Virginia Tech.
Wake Forest showed the field why they are the defending NCAA champions, shooting 29-under to win the event by 22 shots over Virginia Tech. Purdue was third at 3-under, followed by Houston at 2-under, Florida State at 1-over and Oklahoma State at 3-over.
Maddison Hinson-Tolchard has now finished top-10 in both tournaments this season, this time shooting 6-under to finish tied for seventh in the field. She shot weekend rounds of 68 and 64, closing round three at 2-over 72.
Her record-setting weekend in Norman included her 15th career top-10 finish, a tie for the lowest 18-hole score in program history (64) and a counting score streak amassing to 65 consecutive rounds before ending on Monday.
Freshman Ellie Bushnell posted two 60s rounds in Norman, posting a 2-under 68 on Sunday for the best 18-hole score in her young career. Bushnell led the Cowgirls in round three, carding a 1-under 69 to finish the tournament even – tying for 17th in the field.
Clemence Martin concluded the weekend tied for 22nd, sinking four birdies on Monday to finish 1-over 71 in round-three action. Martin brought in 11 birdies across her 54 holes in Norman.
Thitaporn Saithip and Angelica Pfefferkorn finished even on Monday, ending competition tied for 61st and tied for 67th, respectively.
As a team, the Hurricane golfers placed seventh at 6-over par 846. Tulsa scored a final round of 2-over par 282. Freshman Allyn Stephens was second on the Tulsa leaderboard with a 3-over par 213 for 29th place after carding a final round 69 on Monday. Sophomore Grace Kilcrease finished in 34th place with a 214 score after today’s 1-over 71. Junior Sydney Seigel place 61st overall with a 10-over par 220 total score., while fellow junior Lovisa Gunnar finished the tournament in 74th place with a 227 score.
Tulsa will be in action next, Oct. 9-10, as the Hurricane hosts the Dale McNamara Invitational at the Golf Club of Oklahoma.
For host OU, sophomore Savannah Barber fired a 1-under 69 Monday and OU finished tied for eighth at 7-over 847.
Barber finished even par 210 over the three-day tournament and tied for 17th. The Fort Worth, Texas product recorded rounds of 70-71-69, tallying team-best rounds on Saturday and Monday.
Sophomore Isabelle Schlick and freshman Holly McLean each finished 1-over 71 on Monday and wrapped up the tournament tied for 29th (3-over 213).
Senior Nina Lang recorded a 4-over 74 in the third round and concluded the tournament tied for 67th (13-over, 223). After opening the round 4-over 40 through the front nine, Lang tallied back-to-back birdies on the 10th and 11th. She dropped a pair of strokes with consecutive bogeys on the 12th and 13th before ending the tournament with five pars.
Junior Reagan Chaney rounded out the OU lineup with a 7-over 77, recording three birdies. She finished 5-over 215 and tied for 43rd.
Sophomore Gracie Mayo and senior Kaylee Vesely competed as individuals. Mayo recorded a 5-over 75 in the third round and tied for 43rd (5-over, 215). Vesely finished 82nd (26-over, 236).
