UCO, NSU, SWOSU battling it out in NSU Invitational

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The University of Central Oklahoma women’s golf team is in first place after the first day of action in the Northeastern State Classic at Cherry Springs Golf Club in Tahlequah.
The Bronchos shot a 297, one stroke better than the host school, Northeastern. The two schools were the only two of 18 programs to shoot under 300.
“We didn’t start off strong as a whole, but settled down and put together a very solid back nine,” head coach Michael Bond said. “I think we shot 2-over par on the back, and in gusty winds, that’s pleasing. We have to get out of the gate and play well tomorrow in order to win.”
NSU’s Ebba Moberg is in first place individually after shooting a 1-under 71. But Central Oklahoma’s Marla Souvannasing is only one stroke back at 72, par for the course.
Anna Pool and Makena Mucciaccioa both shot a 2-over 74 to settle into a four-way tie for fourth. Sydney Roberts shot a 77 and is tied for 11th while Grace Shin’s 81 put her in a tie for 34th.
The tournament continues with a final round Tuesday. Central Oklahoma tees off at 9:30 a.m. and is grouped with Northeastern State and Southwestern, who is in third place.
Northeastern State sits one back of the lead after Monday’s first round. The RiverHawks fired a 10-over-par 298 to land a stroke shy of overnight leader Central Oklahoma. The Bronchos shot 9-over 297.
NSU sophomore Ebba Moberg was the lone player in the field to shoot under par, as she fired a 1-under 71. Senior Baylee Price and UCO’s Marla Souvannasing are tied for second at even-par 72.
Sophomore Halie Wright sits T-8 at 4-over 76, while fellow sophomore Alexis Armon is tied for 21st at 7-over 79. Sophomore Kelsey Lumpkin rounded out the team score with a T-61 effort at 14-over 86.
Junior Fiona Hakanen and sophomore Kennedy Hudson are both playing as individuals. Hakanen is tied for 34th at 9-over 81, while Hudson sits solo 96th at 32-over 104.
The RiverHawks will begin teeing off in Tuesday’s final round at 9:30 a.m.
