Vitali cruises into quarterfinals in defense of OGA Senior State Amateur

Peter Vitali of Oklahoma City rolled past 2021 champion Eric Gudgel of Stillwater 6 and 5 in the second round of the Oklahoma Golf Association Senior State Amateur Championship at Cedar Ridge Country Club Tuesday.

Vitali, who defeated Jeff Falling of Tulsa 2 up in the morning, is the defending champion. He will face Dave Milley of Tulsa in the quarterfinals Thursday morning. Milley defeated Terry Collier 5 and 3 in the second round Tuesday afternoon.

Mike Gotcher of Broken Arrow faces Kirk Wright of Oklahoma City in another quarterfinal. Gotcher defeated Brad Nelligan of Tulsa 7 and 6 and Scott Mabrey of Tulsa 3 and 2, while Wright, who won this event in 2013, 2016 and 2017, edged Shawn Barker of Bartlesville 1 up and Cedar Ridge member Ken Kee 3 and 2.

In the other bracket, Mike Alsup of Cedar Ridge and the 2007 champion, faces Kirk Maynard of Oklahoma City. Alsup advanced with a 2 and 1 victory over Greg Hathaway of Tulsa and a 2 and 1 win over 2019 champion Blake Gibson of Yukon. Maynard defeated Cedar Ridge member Frank Billings 3 and 2 and Steven Siegenthaler of Bixby 2 and 1.

Ron Roden of Oklahoma City advanced with 5 and 4 victories over Ron Miller of Tulsa and Michael McDonald of Oklahoma City. He will face three-time champion Mike Hughett of Owasso, who is seeking to add to his record 24 OGA championships. Hughett defeated Scott Athey of Enid 6 and 5 and Scooter Hall of Owasso 3 and 1.
