Wolff leads, Cowboys one shot back in Valspar Collegiate
PALM CITY, Fla. — Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team posted an opening 279 Sunday afternoon at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational to stand alone in fourth place at Floridian National Golf Club.
The top-ranked Cowboys finished the day just a stroke behind a trio of teams at the par-71, 6,921-yard layout with their 5-under tally. Florida State, South Carolina and Wake Forest all carded 278 team totals to share the lead in the team race.
OSU’s Matthew Wolff finished the day atop the individual leaderboard, firing a 65 to lead a quartet of players. The sophomore opened with a birdie at the first before carding another at the fifth. He made the turn in 4-under 31 after posting an eagle at the par-5 seventh. Wolff got to 6-under for the day with birdies at Nos. 12 and 13 before carding his lone bogey of the day at the 16th. He rebounded quickly with his fifth birdie of the round at the 17th.
Junior Viktor Hovland joined Wolff in the top 10, signing for a 67 that included five birdies to stand in a tie for sixth place.
Senior Zach Bauchou carded a 73 to come in tied for 41st place, while sophomore Austin Eckroat was a shot back with a 74 and tied for 56th place.
Senior Hayden Wood rounded out the starting five with a 77 to share 70th place.
Freshman Aman Gupta is competing in the event individually and finished the day tied for 13th place after carding an opening 69.
The Cowboys will begin their second round tomorrow at 8:20 a.m. (EST) and will be grouped with Auburn and Texas A&M.
