Abrams upends defending champion Hill in first round of OGA State Amateur
Harley Abrams of Tulsa knocked off defending champion Tres Hill of Elk City 3 and 2 in one of the opening matches of the 2022 Oklahoma Golf Association State Amateur Championship.
And he didn’t stop there.
Abrams, who reached a playoff in the OGA Mid-Amateur Championship last Tuesday with an eagle on the difficult par-5 closing hole, went on to knock out Jesse Rouse of Calera 3 and 1 in the second round Monday afternoon.
Abrams will now face two-time OGA Mid-Amateur champion Kyle Hudelson of Oklahoma City in the third round Wednesday. Hudelson advanced with a 1 up victory over Bryan Boaz of Edmond and a 2 up win over Charlie Crouse of Edmond.
The lone past champion remaining in the field, Jordan Wilson of Edmond, rolled to wins of 6 and 5 over Matthew LaGere of Chandler and 5 and 4 over Bauer Sims of Edmond. He next faces Austin Schmidt of Tulsa, who moved on with victories over Zander Tway of Tuttle (19 holes) and then a 4 and 3 win over Bosten Benn of Edmond. Benn had earlier knocked off Oklahoma commit Ryder Cowan of Edmond.
Among the others advancing to the third round, former Oklahoma State player who turned professional and has regained his amateur status Ian Davis appears in good form. Davis defeated Joel Driver of Oklahoma City and Colter Baca of Edmond, each 4 and 3. He next meets Matthew Braley of Broken Arrow.
