Balanced Golden Eagles win Payne Stewart Memorial, OCU’s Tyrrell takes second
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Three Golden Eagles finished in the top 10 as ORU women’s golf claimed the team championship Tuesday afternoon at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial at Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield, Missouri.
Christinia Riu, Avery Blake and Lydia Swan all finished in the top 10 as the Golden Eagles claimed the team championship for the second time in three years. ORU won by eight strokes after out-playing Austin Peay.
Riu ended round two tied for 22nd and shot a 69 (-3) in round three to finish tied for seventh. Her round three score ties her career low (69). She shot six birdies in the final round and had 12 in the tournament.
Blake also finished tied for seventh with a 216 (E) score. Blake moved up one spot after her even-par 72 in the final round after a 2-under 70 in round two. She had 11 birdies in the tournament with two coming on par three’s in the final round.
Swan closed out the tournament with a 217 (+1) score to be tied for ninth. She madet 11 birdies with six coming in a career-low 66 during the second round, the third lowest individual round score in ORU history.
The 868 team score is the third lowest team three-round tournament score in program history.
NAIA power Oklahoma City University tied for fifth in the tournament, led by Makayla Tyrrell, who opened with a 66 and finished second individually after closing with rounds of 71-73 to finish at 6-under, threee shots behind winner Sofia Chabon of California Baptist.
Jamie Welsh tied for 29th for OCU at 8-over, while Maddi Kamas tied for 34th at 11-over.
