Ryder Cowan of Edmond has a chance to be the first golfer in state history to win the OGA Junior Championship, OGA Stroke Play Championship and OGA State Amateur Championship in the same year. As was proven Monday during the first rounds of the 2023 OGA State Amateur Championship at Southern Hills Country Club, it’s not going to be easy.

Cowan survived a 21-hole ordeal against Cole Stephenson of Tulsa in the opening round, then had to shoot 4-under par in the afternoon to edge Luke Phillips of Edmond 2 and 1 in the afternoon.

Waiting in the third round at 9 a.m. Tuesday is one of the field of 64’s top players in William Sides of Tulsa. The former top-ranked junior in the state who now plays for Southern Methodist blew out his two opponents on his home course, romping past Gabrial DeCasas of Luther 6 and 5 and then downing Kyle Hudelson of Edmond 5 and 4.

If he were to prevail in this event, Cowan, who will be playing for Ryan Hybl’s Oklahoma Sooners in the fall, would be the first man since Joe Nick in 1992 to win the OGA Stroke Play and Match Play championships in the same year. Cowan won the OGA Stroke Play Championship at The Territory in Norman and the OGA Junior Championship at Lincoln Park in Oklahoma City, sweeping both the stroke play and match play championships at that event.

Defending champion Ian Davis of Edmond advanced handily with victories over Matthew Herring of Sand Springs 5 and 4 and Greg Mason of Jenks 4 and 3. Stephen Carney, the 2012 champion when the event was also at Southern Hills, knocked off Oklahoma State golfer Jordan Wilson of Edmond 2 up in the morning then advanced with a 3 and 2 victory over Jeremy Tandoy of Broken Arrow.
