Cowboys shoot 15-under in first round, tied for second in Hawaii
KAMUELA, Hawaii – Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team opened play at the Amer Ari Invitational on Thursday with a 273 total to stand in a three-way tie for second place at Hapuna Golf Course.
The Cowboys’ 15-under total tied them with Texas Tech and Washington at the par-72, 6,875-yard layout. The trio finished the day five shots behind Arizona State. Georgia Tech rounded out the top five with a 14-under 274 total.
A pair of ASU players shared the individual lead as Mason Andersen and James Leow each fired 7-under 65s to pace the field.
Senior Eugenio Chacarra led the way for the Cowboy lineup, firing a 67 to finish the day tied for sixth place. Starting his day on the back nine, Chacarra birdied the 11th and the 14th before carding his lone bogey of the day at the 18th. He would move back to 2-under for the day with a birdie at the third before adding another at the sixth. He would get to 5-under with an eagle at the par-5 eighth hole.
Juniors Brian Stark and Rayhan Thomas were a stroke off the pace of their teammate, finishing tied for 12th place with matching 68s.
Freshman Tiger Christensen posted a 70 to come in tied for 31st place, while sophomore Jonas Baumgartner carded an opening 72 to stand in a tie for 60th place.
Juniors Hazen Newman and Dillon Stewart are competing individually. Newman opened with a 69 to share 23rd place, while Stewart’s 77 tied him for 100th place.
The Cowboys will begin their second round tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. (HST) and will be grouped with UC Davis, Auburn and Georgia Tech. Live scoring for the event is available at golfstat.com.
