Cowboys surge into lead at John Hayt Invitational, Jelley still tops leaderboard
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team used a 281 during its second round at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational on Saturday to move to the top of the leaderboard at Sawgrass Country Club.
The Cowboys began the day seven shots off the lead, but their 7-under total during the second round bettered the second-best total of the day by seven shots. OSU stands at 5-over 581 and will take a four-shot lead into tomorrow’s final round at the par-72, 6,966-yard layout.
OSU’s Brendon Jelley maintained his place atop the individual standings, firing a 68 to stand at 6-under 138 and three shots clear of the field with 18 holes remaining. The sophomore carded eight birdies on the day, including four in a row from Nos. 5-8 to turn at 2-under 34. On his back nine, he birdied Nos. 11-13 as well as No. 16 for a 2-under 34 side.
Junior Wyndham Clark moved up 32 spots on Saturday, following an opening 78 with a 70 to move into a tie for 14th place at 148.
Junior Zachary Olsen posted a 74 during his second round to finish the day as one of three Cowboys tied for 21st place at 149.
Freshman Nick Heinen’s 71 moved him into 21st as well, while senior Jordan Niebrugge also finished at 149 with a 72 during his second round.
Competing individually, freshman Zach Bauchou finished the day tied for ninth at 147 after carding a 76, while sophomore Kristoffer Ventura signed for a 75 to stand in a tie for 34th place at 152.
The Cowboys will begin their final round tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. (EST) and will be grouped with Tennessee and North Florida.
Tulsa redshirt freshman Sam Humphreys is in 15th place after a 1-over 73 on Saturday for a 148 total to lead the Tulsa men’s golf team. Tulsa is in 14th place with a 615 total after shooting 15 strokes better today than in Friday’s first round.
Freshman Marc Kepka is in 46th place after today’s round of 75 puts him at 154 for two rounds. Preston Crawford equaled Humphreys round of 73 to move up from Friday’s 84th place to 64th place on Saturday. Crawford has a 157 total after 36 holes.
Freshman Jack Knoesel and sophomore Francisco Yanez sit in 79th and 82nd place, respectively. Knoesel carded a round of 83 today for a 161 total, while Yanez has a total score of 162 following today’s round of 79.
