Jelley tied for lead at Sawgrass, OSU third
Ponte Verde Beach, Fla. –– Brendon Jelley is tied for the lead at 2-under and his Oklahoma State team is in third place overall after the first round of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational Friday.
Jelley, a sophomore from Jenks, is tied with Phillip Knowles of North Florida, while OSU teammate Zach Bauchou is tied for third after a 1-under 71.
The Tulsa men’s golf team sits in 13th place. The youthful Hurricane squad opened play with a score of 315 on the par-72 Sawgrass Country Club course.
Tulsa redshirt freshman Sam Humphreys finished the day at 75 and in a tie for 18th place to lead the Hurricane. Humphreys went 5-over par with a bogey on the par-4 5th hole, which was his 14th hole of the day, but sank birdie putts on two of his final three holes to close out the round to finish at 3 over.
Freshmen Jack Knoesel and Marc Kepka shot first round scores of 78 and 79, respectively. Knoesel is in a 46th place tie and Kepka is tied for 54th place. Sophomore Francisco Yanez carded a round of 83 for 79th place, and freshman Preston Crawford in in 85th place with a score of 84.
North Florida leads the field after a first round score of 5-over par 293, while Jacksonville is in second place at 299. UNF’s Phillip Knowles and Oklahoma State’s Brendon Jelley are tied for first place after turning in 2-under par rounds of 70 today.
Tournament play continues on Saturday with the final round on Sunday.
