Cowboys tie with TCU, OU falls to Baylor in Big 12 Match Play
Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team halved its match with TCU during the third round of action on Saturday morning at the Big 12 Match Play tournament at Houston Oaks. Each side won three points to earn one point toward their team total for the event.
The Cowboys will carry a 2-0-1 mark into the final day of action on Sunday. OSU will conclude pool play against Kansas tomorrow with a spot in the championship match on the line.
TCU got a pair of points out of the first two matches with Stefano Mazzoli defeating junior Viktor Hovland, 3 and 2, and Alejandro Aguilera taking down OSU freshman Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen, 4 and 3.
Sophomore Matthew Wolff rolled to a 7-and-5 victory over Hayden Springer. After halving the first two holes of the match, Wolff reeled off five consecutive wins to take command of the match. Wolff won three consecutive holes to close out the match with five remaining.
Sophomore Austin Eckroat rallied late in his match with Triston Fisher to post a 3-and-2 victory. Eckroat was two down through five before going back to all square on the match’s 10th hole. He took his first lead of the day four holes later and won the next two holes to close out the match.
Senior Zach Bauchou notched OSU’s third point of the day with a 4-and-2 win over Turner MacLean. Bauchou took his first lead of the day on the match’s sixth hole and regained it for good two holes later. He claimed the match’s 12th, 14th, 15th and 16th holes to close out the match.
In match No. 6, freshman Aman Gupta fell to David Ravetto, 4 and 2, for the Horned Frogs’ third point of the day.
At the conclusion of pool play, each team will be ranked 1-5 within their pool based on points accrued. The first session will begin at 8 a.m. and the second session at 1:30 p.m. each day. The championship match will feature the team with the highest point total from Pool A and the team with the highest total from Pool B.
Oklahoma men’s golf team fell to Baylor, 4-1-1, in its lone match at the Big 12 Match Play Championship. The No. 2 seeded Sooners picked up a win from junior Riley Casey over Baylor’s Ryan Grider, 3&2. Casey grabbed an early lead by winning four of the first six holes. Grider made a run late in the match to trim Casey’s lead, but the junior clinched his match on the 16th hole with a birdie to put OU on the board.
Freshman Logan McAllister halved his match against Baylor’s Mark Reppe. McAllister took the lead late in the match, but Reppe won the final hole to finish all-square.
Through four matches, OU boasts a 1-1-1 record at the event and has four points in Pool B, currently tied for third with K-State. OU received a bye for the afternoon session on Saturday.
OU will wrap up pool play on Sunday against No. 3 seed Texas at 8 a.m. CT. The Sooners will then play their final match after the conclusion of pool play.
