RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – A pair of Sooners sit in the top five on the individual leaderboard and No. 15 Oklahoma closed the second round of the Puerto Rico Classic in a tie for sixth.

Playing unattached from the lineup, Stephen Campbell Jr. and Jaxon Dowell fired matching 66s (-6) Monday and share fourth after 36 holes. The Sooners (T6, -19) will look to make up ground in Tuesday’s final round as the field chases Georgia (1, -33).

Showing the depth of the OU squad but also the dilemma for OU coach Ryan Hybl, all three of his players playing unattached were higher on the leaderboard than his five starters as Ben Lorenz was in 15th place after a second-round 71 left him at 137. Freshman Ryder Cowan of Edmond shot consecutive rounds of 69 to lead the Sooner starters at 138, followed by Drew Goodman at 139 (67-72).

The Sooners struggled early at Grand Reserve Golf Club as the top of the leaderboard created distance between themselves as the back-to-back champion Sooners, but battled and made a late surge to get within striking distance. Oklahoma closed its round by sinking 15 birdies on the back nine, including a run of three straight birdies from freshman PJ Maybank (T42, -3).

Campbell Jr. (T4, -9) pieced together one of the best rounds of his career at the par-72 track on Monday, matching a career-low 66. After starting on the 18th and bogeying the first, the Richmond, Texas, product rattled off seven birdies to fire a 66 (-6) and move into the top five.

Jaxon Dowell (T4, -9) started on the 17th and was even par thru four but then birdied the fourth and eagled the fifth to get heated up. Dowell found four more birdies, paired with a final bogey to sign for a 66 (-6) and share fourth with Campbell Jr.

Cowan (T20, -6) posted a 3-under 69 that featured six birdies as the freshman has now posted back-to-back rounds in the 60s for the first time in his career. Cowan is atop the Sooner lineup card entering Tuesday’s final round in a tie for 20th.

Luke Kluver rebounded from an opening-round 72 (E) with a 69 (-3) on Monday to move into a tie with Maybank III for 42nd.

Goodman signed for an even-par 72 and shares 31st, while Jase Summy was 1-under on the day and sits in a tie for 51st.

Dowell and Campbell Jr. are three back of the leader, Purdue’s Nels Surtani (-12), who posted a 65 (-7) on Monday.

The Sooners teed off in the final round of the event at 5:30 a.m. CT with Purdue (4, -23) and Minnesota (5, -21) on Tuesday morning.
