Eckroat earns spot in U.S. Open, takes second in Dallas qualifier
Edmond’s Austin Eckroat played his way into the 2023 U.S. Open by taking second in a sectional qualifier at Northwood Club and Bent Tree Golf Club in Dallas Monday.
Eckroat, a rookie on the PGA Tour who finished tied for second at the AT&T Byron Nelson two weeks ago, shot rounds of 64 at Northwood and 66 at Bent Tree to finish at 11-under, second to Carson Young of Anderson, S.C., who shot 63-62 to finsh at 16-under.
Also among the eight in the field of 120 players who earned spots in the U.S. Open was Sergio Garcia, who finished tied for fourth at 9-under.
Among those who missed the cut were former Oklahoma State golfer Brian Stark, one shot outside the cut line at 8-under. Tyson Reeder of Edmond finished at 7-under, current OSU golfer Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen finished at 3-under, Oklahoma golfer Jase Summy finshed even par and Austin Hannah of Tulsa finished at 2-over.
Some of the bigger name pros not to advance included Ryan Palmer (-7), Ryan Moore (-7), Graeme McDowell (-7), Martin Laird (-4) and JB Holmes (WD).
The U.S. Open is scheduled June 15-18 at Los Angeles Country Club.
