Gomez stars for Riverhawks in NSU Classic at Muskogee GC
MUSKOGEE – Northeastern State’s Carlos Gomez shot a 3-under-par 68 Tuesday to move to 7-under overall, finishing in third place individually at the 23rd NSU Men’s Golf Classic at the Muskogee Golf Club.
Gomez climbed up three spots on the leaderboard, carding a 206 (68-70-68) was just one shot back of the overall medalist lead. The third-place finish is his fourth career top-5, and lowest posted rounds since Gomez’s true freshman season.
Among the top ten in the field, NSU was the most significant mover, rising two places to fifth overall, carding an 863 (288-282-293). The RiverHawks’ home tournament featured 18 teams with eight in the top-25 or receiving votes in the latest GCAA Coaches’ NCAA Divison II Poll.
NSU would beat six of those eight, with top-ranked Arkansas Tech winning by five strokes on an 837 score over #9-ranked Central Missouri.
Ryan Morant was NSU’s second-best finisher shooting a 208 (74-69-75), and was tied for 27th. Dominic Stevens came in three strokes behind Morant (73-73-75), tied for 45th overall. Brayden Strickland carded a 222 (73-70-79), tied for 53rd place, and Brett Wilcoxen had a 226 (75-76-75), placing 70th overall.
Harding’s Leo Maciejek took medalist honors in a first-hole playoff over ATU’s Santiago De La Fuente. The two golfers shot an eight-under 205 score.
Among other Oklahoma teams, Southwestern Oklahoma State placed seventh at 870, UCO was eighth at 874, Southeast Oklahom State was 11th at 881, Southern Nazaren 17th at 904 and Northwesteren Oklahoma State 18th at 909.
