Gudgel outlasts Gotcher, Vitali seeks first OGA Senior State Amateur crown

In a duel of past champions, No. 1 seed Eric Gudgel of Stillwater edged Mike Gotcher of Broken Arrow in 23 holes Tuesday afternoon to reach the quarterfinals of the Oklahoma Golf Association Senior State Amateur Championship at Twin Hills Country Club in Oklahoma City.

Gudgel, who defeated Gotcher in the 2021 finals, birdied the fifth hole in the playoff. Gotcher, who won in 2024 over Ron Roden, made five consecutive pars in the playoff.

Gudgel moves on to face Lewis Stephenson of Edmond Wednesday morning. Semifinals are Wednesday afternoon and the championship match is Thursday morning.

Stephenson advanced with a 3 and 2 victory over Kevin Arledge of Edmond.

Roden, of Oklahoma City, is back in the hunt as well and moved into the quarters with a 3 and 2 victory over Cary Decker of Edmond. Kirk Maynord, the defending champion in the OGA Senior Stroke Play Championship, defeated Roger Hobbs of Edmond 3 and 1 and will face Roden.

Peter Vitali, the former pro who won the Senior Stroke Play title in both 2023 and 2024, is seeking his first match play crown. He edged Christopher Lee of Edmond 1 up and will play Brian Cook of Tulsa, who took down Dustin Wigington of Oklahoma City 1 up.

The other quarterfinal pits Charlie Crouse of Oklahoma City against Chad Borin of Edmond. Borin knocked out Blake Gibson of Yukon 2 up while Crouse defeated Ron Miller of Tulsa 4 and 3.

The semifinals are set this morning in the Super Senior Division for those 65 and older. Bruce Maddux of Ponca City takes on Jerry Nick of Okmulgee in one match, while Terry Hughes of Bartlesville faces Kirk Wright of Oklahoma City in the other. Hughes is the two-time defending champion in the Super Senior Stroke Play while Nick won that event in 2018, 2019 and 2020. Wright won the Senior State Amateur in 2013, 2016 and 2017.
