Hunt begins Monday for OGA, WOGA State Amateur titles

Seven past champions will tee off Monday when the 113th Oklahoma Golf Association State Amateur Championship begins at Cedar Ridge Country Club with 106 of the state’s top amateurs vying over 18 holes of stroke play for 32 spots in match play.

Champions range from Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame inductee Mike Hughett who won in 2001 to defending champion Christian Johnson, who prevailed in 2024 at The Patriot in Owasso.

Also in the field are Stephen Carney (2010 and 2012), Jamie Voegeli (2020), Tres Hill (2021), Ian Davis (2022) and William McDonald (2023).

The complete pairings list can be viewed here.

If the home course advantage means anything, Cedar Ridge has four members in the field and all of them are connected to the University of Tulsa. Former TU golfers Rob Laird, Billy Lowry and Chris Noel qualified as did new TU football coach Tre Lamb.

The University of Oklahoma will be represented by Cameron Cheek of Owasso and NCAA champion Oklahoma State by Colin Bond of Norman.

The father-son team of Eric Gudgel and Grant Gudgel both qualified. Dad Eric goes off at 10:20 with junior stars Emerson Majma of Edmond and Samual Bonaobra of Broken Arrow. Grant plays in the group in front at 10:10 with Bond and Mike Hearne of Yukon.

The rounds of 32 and 16 will be played Tuesday, quarterfinals and semifinals Wednesday and the finals are Thursday morning.

The Women’s Oklahoma Golf Association will follow a similar format for its State Amateur Championship Monday through Thursday at Indian Springs Country Club.

Notables entered include defending champion Natalie Blonien of Altus, as well as collegians Jenni Roller of Tulsa and Cedar Ridge, Lucy Darr of Oklahoma State, Reagan Chaney and Raychel Nelke of Oklahoma, Maddi Kamas of Abilene Christian, Brooklyn Benn of Wichita State, Ashlyn Acosta of Southwest OSU, Ailshie Layne of Central Oklahoma and Peyton Coburn of Bradley.

Coming in, however, the hottest golfer in the field may be Juliana Hong of Norman North, who on Thursday won her first AJGA event with a 12-under performance in the C.T. Pan Foundation Junior Championship at The Bridges in Gunter, Texas.
