Hunt, Laird run away with OGA Four-Ball Championship on home course Cedar Ridge CC
Cedar Ridge members Tyler Hunt and Rob Laird combined for an 11-under par 60 Tuesday to cruise to a 10-shot victory over fellow members Billy Lowry and Chris Noel in the Oklahoma Golf Association Four-Ball Championship on their home course.
Hunt and Laird had opened with a 5-under 67 on Monday. They put their collective pedal to the medal with the 60 on Tuesday, mainly fueled by an incredible run by Laird that brought 59 into play.
After Hunt birdied the par-5 first hole, Laird took over with birdies on holes 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11. He made a long difficult birdie putt on 11, after which everyone in the group essentially bowed down.
Hunt made birdie on 15, then Laird birdied the 16th and 18th holes. The duo fell one shot shy of the magical 59, which Hunt said was definitely on their minds after about the 11th hole.
“When we started off we just wanted to beat Chris and Billy,” Hunt said. “After Rob birdied 7-8-9, 59 was the goal and we were hell bent on getting there. We had some chances.”
Laird was using a new Odyssey putter and Hunt said his closest birdie putt was about 6 feet.
“I think it definitely earned a place in his bag,” Hunt said.
Lowry and Noel, both former University of Tulsa players as is Laird, shot 67-70 to finish at 137, a shot ahead of Austin Schmidt and Preston Wilkins who tied for third at 138 (71-67) with Heath Myers and Kyle Hudelson (69-69). Bradley Nelligan and Jamie Voegelli tied for fifth with Jeff Bell and Elliot Soyez at 139.
Cedar Ridge members Michael Alsup and Ken Kee made it a sweep with a two-shot victory in the OGA Senior Four-Ball, shooting rounds of 69-67 to edge Jeff Oakes of Edmond and Mickey Tettleton of Norman as well as the team of Kirk Wright and Kirk Maynord of Oklahoma City by two shots.
