Hunt, Voegeli grind out OGA Four-Ball Championship; Hughett-Gotcher collect senior crown

Jamie Voegeli and Tyler Hunt of Tulsa were solid down the stretch, making par on the final four holes after a birdie on the par-5 14th to preserve a one-shot victory over Stephen Carney of Broken Arrow and Jacob Newsom of Tulsa in the Oklahoma Golf Association Four-Ball Championship at Cherokee Hills Golf Club in Catoosa Wednesday.
The winning duo shot 2-under 68 in the final round after an opening 65 for a 7-under total. Carney and Newsom shot 65-68 to finish at 6-under.
“We were hanging on for dear life,” Hunt said. “I hadn’t played Cherokee Hills in a while and I forgot how tough it is and how undulated the greens are. And with the wind coming from everywhere, it was just very difficult. But it’s always fun to win, especially with one of your best friends.”
Voegeli is the 2020 OGA State Amateur Champion won at The Patriot while Hunt won this event with Rob Laird in 2022 in a 10-shot rout. Carney is a two-time OGA State Amateur champion (2010, 2012) while Newsom is the defending Class 6A state champion for Broken Arrow.
Four teams tied for third at 4-under: Colton Staggs of Broken Arrow and Preston Wilkins of Tulsa (69-67); Mike Hearne of Yukon and Kyle Hudelson of Edmond (67-69); Benjamin Bench of Yukon and Sam Bradford of Oklahoma City (67-69) and Lance Maxwell of Norman and Chase Lindsey of Moore (65-71).
The big news in the Senior Division was the five-hole playoff for the title won by Mike Hughett of Owasso and Mike Gotcher of Broken Arrow. For Hughett, it added to his record OGA haul as it was his 25th championship.
Gotcher birdied the par-4 18th hole to force a playoff with Shawn Barker and Terry Hughes of Bartlesville (66-67) at 7-under. Gotcher and Hughett played the back nine in 4-under 30 to card a 6-under 64. Hughett chipped in for birdie on the par-3 16th and also birdied the par-3 13th while both birdied the par-4 12th.
In the playoff, both teams made par on the first three holes (1-2-1) and then birdie on the par-5 second hole as they played it a second time. For the fifth hole they moved to the par-4 third hole, where Hughett stuffed a wedge from 105 yards to 3 feet for the winning birdie.
It was the first OGA victory for Hughett since the 2022 OGA Mid-Amateur. For Gotcher, it was his third OGA title including a one-shot victory over Hughett in the 2022 OGA Senior Stroke Play Championship at Meadowbrook Country Club.
“It’s been four years and you begin to wonder if you’ll ever get another one,” Hughett said. “So I’m glad to get this one with Mike.”
