Jelley, Overstreet advance to third round of OGA State Amateur
One of the best matches of the Oklahoma Golf Association State Amateur Championship at Southern Hills Country Club probably took place in the first round.
That’s where Brendon Jelley of Tulsa, champion of this event in 2014 and 2015, had to go 21 holes to edge Oklahoma State teammate Tyson Reeder 1 up. Due to how they played in the qualifier, the two were paired in the first round, where either probably could have breezed to a late round otherwise.
Jelley showed evidence of that by winning his second match 8 and 6 over Declan Kenny of Dallas.
Reeder had numerous chances to send Jelley home, but missed several short birdie putts, including one of about four feet on the 10th hole, their first playoff hole. The lefty was long with his approach on the par-4 12th, with the ball rolling into a back bunker, and he couldn’t get up and down to extend the match.
It wasn’t smooth sailing for defending champion and No. 1 seed Quade Cummins of Weatherford and the University of Oklahoma. After dispatching Matt Ritchie of Owasso 7 and 5 in the first round, Cummins was upset 3 and 2 by Alexander Hughes of Tulsa and the University of Central Oklahoma. Hughes defeated Navid Majidi of Tulsa and Northeastern State University 4 and 2 in the first round.
NCAA individual runnerup Mason Overstreet of Kingfisher and Arkansas advanced with a 6 and 5 second-round victory over Hunter Laughlin of Magnum. Cody Burrows of Chickasha and the Oral Roberts University had decisive wins over Michael Alsup of Tulsa and Carson Griggs of Sand Springs and is one to watch this week.
Third-seed Chris Noel, a former University of Tulsa star, advanced as did current Oklahoma Sooner Thomas Johnson. Ben Klaus of Oklahoma City, who played professionally for a time after graduating from Edmond North, made it to the third round, as did current Edmond North player Brock Polhill as well as McCain Shellhardt, an Edmond Memorial grad who now plays for UMKC.
Complete results are below. Here is a link to the bracket with third-round pairings. The quarterfinals will be held Tuesday afternoon, with the semifinals at 8 a.m. Wednesday and the finals at 12:30 p.m.
