HOUSTON – The University of Central Oklahoma men’s golf team opened the spring season with a victory in the Houston Classic after three trips around the 6,945-yard track at the Golf Club of Houston.

Central bested the competition with a 54-hole 873. The Bronchos shot rounds of 294 and 284 Monday before firing a team 295 Tuesday to earn the victory. It’s the first team win of the 2019-20 season for the Bronchos, who finished in the top 10 of all four fall tournaments.

“We played well as a team,” UCO head coach Josh Fosdick said. “I think we could have played better, but we did well enough to get the win and that’s good. For this being our first tournament back from break and we didn’t get to play as much as you’d like in the winter months, it’s good to come back and get a win.”

Jacob Lackey led the charge for the Bronchos, finishing second in the individual standings. The junior shot a 54-hole 217, just three shots of the medalist. Lackey shot rounds of 74 and 70 Monday before firing a 1-over 73 Tuesday.

Yannic Oppenheimer finished tied for seventh place. Also a junior, Oppenheimer finished with a 220 after rounds of 73, 70, and 77.

The Bronchos then had a trio of scorers finished tied for 13th.

Kylian CavdarJoe Lemieux, and Blake Murray all finished 13th after each shot a 54-hole 224. Cavdar shot rounds of 79, 72, and 73, Lemieux shot 71, 72, and 81, and Murray went for 76, 76, and 72.

Evan Griffith competed as well this weekend, playing 54 holes unattached. Griffith finished tied for 17th with a 226. The freshman shot rounds of 75, 74, and 77.

Central Oklahoma has five tournaments on the spring slate. The Bronchos will go to Dade City, Fla. in two weeks for the Saint Leo Invitational before hosting the annual Broncho Invite at Oak Tree in Edmond next month.
