William McDonald of Oklahoma City fired a 5-under 65 to take the first round lead over a stellar field in the Oklahoma Golf Association Stroke Play Championship at Dornick Hills Golf Club in Ardmore.

McDonald, who is transferring from the University of Arkansas to Cincinnati for the 2022-23 season, has a three-shot lead over Lane Wallace of Yukon and Oral Roberts University, and former professional Dustin Wigington of Oklahoma City, who each shot 68. JR Hurley of Norman is tied for fourth with Sxason Ross of Ardmore and Jordan Wilson of Edmond and Oklahoma State at 69.

In a group of six at even-par 70 are Jaxon Dowell of Edmond and the University of Oklahoma, James Roller of Tulsa and Texas Tech along with Mesa Falleur of Muskogee and UMKC, Charlie Jackson of Norman and Abilene Christian, Jesse Pennington of Oklahoma City and Luke Phillips of Edmond.

The tournament will be cut to the low 30 and ties following the second round Tuesday with the final round Wednesday. Dornick Hills is the first course designed by legendary architect Perry Maxwell and reopened this spring after a major renovation of the greens with the design work done at no charge by famous architect and Maxwell admirer Tom Doak of Michigan.
