McGreevy fires dazzling 61 in first round of Oklahoma Open, ties course record

Max McGreevy came in battle tested after eight events on the Mackenzie Tour in Canada and roasted Oak Tree Country Club’s East Course with a 9-under 61 in the first round of the Oklahoma Open Thursday.

The 54-hole event concludes Saturday. The field will be cut to the low 40 and ties after Friday’s round.

McGreevy has a four-shot lead over Britt Pavelonis of Harrisburg, Ill., and Eric Kline of Ponca City, both of whom shot 65. Six golfers share third at 66, including Ian Davis of Edmond.

Among the 10 golfers to shoot 3-under 67 were Oklahomans Jason Meece of Newcastle, Greg Mason of Jenks, Cody Burrows of Chickasha and Tyler Hargus of Maud, as well as former Oklahoma State golfer Kevin Dougherty of Murrietta, Calif.

McGreevy’s 61 tied the competitive course record set by John Bizik in the 1997 Oklahoma Open. McGreevy was 9-under through 13 holes before finishing with four consecutive pars. He birdied holes 3-4-5-6 in succession then made five consecutive birdies on holes 9-13.

Since helping lead the University of Oklahoma to the national championship in June, McGreevy has been playing on the Mackenzie Tour in the hopes of finishing in the top five on that tour’s money list, which would earn him an exemption on to the Web.com Tour in  2018. He currently ranks 16th with $26,719.

Oak Tree National member and former PGA Tour player Gil Morgan shot 73. He will need to better his age of 70 by several shots Friday to make the cut.
