McGreevy to defend title at Oklahoma Open, Gil Morgan in field

Defending champion Max McGreevy of Edmond will tee off in a pairing with Trent Whitekiller of Sallisaw and Cody Burrows of Chickasha at 9:50 a.m. Thursday as the Oklahoma Open gets under way at Oak Tree Country Club on the East Course.

McGreevy, a former University of Oklahoma Sooner who helped lead OU to the 2017 national championship, has been playing on the Tour and the Adams Pro Tour. Whitekiller, a former All-American at Oklahoma State, nearly won the Texarkana Open on the APT Tour last week. Burrows, who will be a senior at Oral Roberts, was the 2017 Summit League Golfer of the Year and runner-up that year in the OGA State Amateur Championship.

McGreevy won’t be the only past champion in the field. Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame inductee Gil Morgan, who won this event in 1981 before all but two of the other current competitors were alive, as well as in 1997, is playing for the second consecutive year since his retirement from full-time competition on the Champions Tour. Morgan tees off with Joel Driver of Oklahoma City and Daniel Langley of Shawnee at 9:40 a.m.

Three-time OGA State Amateur Champion Brendon Jelley of Tulsa is in the field along with former OSU teammates Nick Heinen and Stratton Nolen. None of the three young professionals was able to crack the lineup during OSU’s postseason run to the 2018 national championship but all contributed to the Cowboys standout season.

Luke Phillips of Edmond shot a 67 last week at Oak Tree West to lead the amateur qualifying for the event. A complete list of scores and qualifiers is below.

Complete pairings for the first-two rounds of the 54-hole event are here.  The field will be cut to the low 40 and ties for the final round on Saturday.
