NSU, Johnson grab lead in Dave Falconer Classic
DANVILLE, Ark. – The Northeastern State men’s golf team was the only team to shoot less than 300 in Monday’s opening round of the Dave Falconer Classic, which is being contested on the par-72, 7,047-yard Chamberlyne Country Club.
The RiverHawks posted a team total of 11-over-par 299 in the first round and hold a one stroke lead over Washburn. Southwestern Oklahoma State is in solo third at 14-over 302, and both Missouri Southern State and Arkansas Tech are tied for fourth at 17-over 305.
Central Oklahoma, the No. 7-ranked team in the nation, is currently 10 strokes behind NSU and in a tie for eighth at 21-over 309.
Sophomore Marc Johnson carded a 2-under 70 and leads the individual standings. He holds a one stroke lead over MSSU’s Ryan Buerk and he also leads a group of three at even par.
Sophomore Tate Williamson is playing in his first tournament of the year and is tied for 15th at 3-over 75. Seniors Zach Tucker and Josh Strimple are both tied for 35th at 5-over 77, and junior Brent Williamson is tied for 65th after shooting 8-over 80.
NSU will attempt to win its first tournament of the year when the final round begins at 11 a.m. March 10.
