OC Eagles take second in Midwestern State Invitational
WICHITA FALLS, Texas (March 15, 2022) – Freshman Sofia Benavides Herberth posted her first career top-five finish to lead Oklahoma Christian to a runner-up showing in the Midwestern State Invitational, which ended Tuesday at Wichita Falls Country Club.
OC was seeking what would have been its third straight win in the Midwestern State event. The Eagles posted a final-round team score of 320. That allowed OC to pass second-round leader Cameron, but Midwestern State (Texas) posted a 314 and finished with an overall score of 942, six shots better than the Eagles at 948. Cameron placed third in the nine-team tournament at 950.
The second-place team finished matched the highest this golf season by the Eagles, who also finished second a week earlier in the Diffie Ford-Lincoln Invitational in Oklahoma City.
Benavides Herberth, from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, finished second among the tournament’s 48 competitors with nine birdies during the three-round tournament. She had one on Tuesday en route to a 10-over-par 82 on the 5,860-yard course. That left her in third place at 230, eight shots behind the medalist, Juanita Gomez of Midwestern State. Iona Roska of Cameron (225) finished second.
OC sophomore Wilma Merenmies of Raasepori, Finland, took seventh at 236 and her 78 on Tuesday was the top individual score for the Eagles. Freshman Sarah Sherrard of Moore, Okla., finished 11th at 242 after a final-round 81.
The 2021 individual champion of the Midwestern State tournament, junior Alexandria Bennett of Plano, Texas, shot a 79 and tied for 12th at 243. Another shot back, tied for 14th at 244, was freshman Haley Blevins of Edmond, Okla., who post a final-round 82.
