OCU women finish sixth in Sam Houston Bearkat Invitational

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Oklahoma City University posted a sixth-place showing in the Sam Houston State Bearkat Invitational on Tuesday at Ravens Nest Golf Club.

Oklahoma City finished ahead of seven NCAA Division I squads. The Stars stand at No. 1 in the Women’s Golf Coaches Association NAIA rankings.

Sam Houston cruised to a 38-stroke victory  at the Bearkat Course on Tuesday.

The Bearkats fired a 5-over 289 to finish 1-under 851 for the tournament on the par-71, 6,058-yard course. ULM placed second at 891 followed by Houston Christian (901), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (904), UTEP (908), Oklahoma City University (909), Tarleton (916), Texas A&M-Commerce (927), Lamar (929), UTRGV (939), Stephen F. Austin (939), UTA (951) and Texas Southern (990).

Sam Houston captured the top three individual medalist spots.

 MaKayla Tyrrell delivered a tie for 15th to lead OCU. Tyrrell, a freshman from Southlake, Texas, sank six birdies.

Three Stars turned in top-20 finishes. Maddi Kamas and Morgan Palermo had identical finishes, tying for 17th. Kamas, a sophomore from Kingfisher, Okla., reeled in a 75-73-78–226, while Palermo, a sophomore from Parker, Colo., recorded a 72-78-76–226. Kamas buried a team-high eight birdies plus the only eagle by the field. Palermo made three birdies.

Natalie Gough contributed a 77-79-78–234 and nailed three birdies for OCU. Paige Wood had an 82-77-79–238.

OCU announced following its previous event that decorated head coach Marty McCauley was no longer its head coach with no further explanation. Shortly after star freshman Reagan Chaney of Ardmore announced on Twitter that she would be transferring to play for the University of Oklahoma.

Oklahoma City plays next in the Central Oklahoma Grace Shin Invitational on Oct. 3-4 at the Golf Club of Edmond in Edmond, Okla.
