Oklahoma ties strong in Western Amateur

July 30, 2024August 2, 2024 Ken MacLeod

The Western Amateur, one of the most grueling tests of amateur golf, is under way at Moraine Country Club in Dayton, Ohio, and it has a decided Oklahoma flavor.

Among the contestants are Parker Sands of Edmond, Will Sides of Tulsa, Ryder Cowan of Edmond and Drew Goodman of Norman. University of Oklahoma teammates of Cowan and Goodman playing include Stephen Campbell Jr. and Jace Summy. Oklahoma State golfers in the field include Gaven Lane, Preston Stout, John Wild, Eric Lee and Ethan Fang.

Live scoring is here.

The Western Amateur is renowned for being the toughest test in amateur golf. It has been a prestigious national championship since its founding in 1899. Many of golf’s greatest players have etched their names on the George R. Thorne Trophy, but many more were unable to conquer the grueling format.

The field features 156 invited players from across the world. They play 18 holes of individual stroke play on Tuesday and Wednesday, after which the field is cut to the low 44 scores and ties. The remaining players play 36 holes of individual stroke play on Thursday to determine the low 16 finishers. The “Sweet Sixteen” compete in match play on Friday and Saturday to decide a champion.

The Western Amateur’s Sweet Sixteen represent the best of the best in amateur golf. Their collective accomplishments include:

- 93 major championships since 1956
- 22 PGA TOUR Player of the Year Awards since 1990
- 10 FedExCup titles
- 14 PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year Awards since 2000
- 11 participants in the 2023 Ryder Cup
