OSU duo Wood, Olsen lead U.S. Open qualifying at Jimmie Austin
Oklahoma State golfer Hayden Wood shot 30 on the back nine to tie teammate Zachary Olsen with rounds of 6-under 66 to lead the field in U.S. Open local qualifying Tuesday at Jimmie Austin University of Oklahoma Golf Course in Norman.
Blake Trimble of Houston shot 67, while University of Oklahoma golfer Thomas Johnson from Norman qualified with a 71. Oklahoma State’s Brendon Jelley won a playoff with Garrison Mendoza of Clinton and Oklahoma City University, OSU’s Kristoffer Ventura and Conrad Walcher of Oklahoma City for the final spot after each shot even-par 72.
Wood nearly drove the green on the 10th hole to ignite his six-birdie binge on the back nine. He birdied holes 11, 13 and 14 before draining a 35-footer on 17. He then reached the par-5 18th in two and two-putted for the sixth birdie.
“After shooting even on the front, I knew I had to make some birdies,” Wood said. “All the OSU guys were playing well, we had four of the top five including ties.”
It was a strong showing for the Cowboys on rival OU’s home course and Wood said they hope to take that momentum to regionals beginning Monday in Austin, Texas.
“We feel like we let one get away at the Big 12 (Texas came from behind on the final two holes to win by one.) We’ve got a strong team and looking forward to going down there to Texas and having a great week.”
The qualifying golfers will advance to a sectional qualifying site. Wood, who also made it through local qualifying last year, said he will go to the Columbus, Ohio sectional held the Monday after the conclusion of The Memorial. The 2017 U.S. Open is scheduled June 15-18 at Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin.
Also for OSU, sophomore Zach Bauchou advanced through local qualifying in Hot Springs, Ark., grabbing one of five spots at Hot Springs Country Club’s Arlington Course after carding a 68.
