OU men’s golf holds third place after 36 holes
NORMAN, Okla. — After two rounds of competition, the No. 23 University of Oklahoma men’s golf team sits in third place at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas. The 54-hole, two-day event is being played at the par-71, 7,068-yard Royal Oaks Country Club.
On Monday, the Sooners tallied a 36-hole 730 (+20). OU opened the day with a 366 (+11) before adding a 364 (+9) in the afternoon, the best team score of the second round.
The 12-team field features eight squads ranked within the top 50 of the latest Golfweek/Sagarin poll. Six players are playing per team, with five scores counting toward the team total.
Oklahoma State, ranked No. 43, sits atop the leaderboard with a 724 (+14), followed by No. 9 Baylor at 16 over par. No. 20 New Mexico and No. 26 Houston round out the top five with scores of 736 (+26) and 738 (+28), respectively.
"It was a tough day at Royal Oaks," said Ryan Hybl, sixth-year OU head coach. "The wind blew hard, the greens were firm and it was hard to make birdies. We put ourselves with a chance to win tomorrow, and that is what we want. The golf course is tough and the best team will win tomorrow. I like where our guys are at and the attitude I see."
Grant Hirschman led the Sooners, recording a two-round 141 (-1) on Monday. The freshman carded a career-low 68 (-3) for the first 18 holes before adding a 2-over-par 73. Hirschman sits in a tie for third place out of 72 competitors, five strokes behind individual leader Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen of Baylor.
After shooting a 73 (+2) and 70 (-1) on Monday, sophomore Max McGreevy holds seventh place with a 1-over 143. Between the two rounds, McGreevy pocketed eight birdies, including on three of his last seven holes of the second round.
Junior Beau Titsworth is tied for 20th place with a 147 (+5), while senior Michael Gellerman holds a share of 32nd place with a 9-over 151. Titsworth recorded scores of 74 (+3) and 73 (+2) for the first two rounds, while Gellerman shot a 76 (+5) and 75 (+4).
With scores of 153 (+11), junior Luke Kwon and freshman Rylee Reinertson are tied for 50th place. Kwon started the day with a 9-over-par 80 before improving for the second 18 holes with a 2-over 73. Reinertson, making his first collegiate appearance, shot a 75 (+4) followed by a 78 (+7).
The final round of the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate is slated for Tuesday. OU will be paired with Oklahoma State and Baylor and tee off from hole No. 1 beginning at 9:30 a.m. CT. Live results will be available at GolfStat.com.
