Oklahoma women’s golf picked up its third straight top-two showing by taking second place at the Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla., on Wednesday. The Sooners carded a three day score of 869 (+5) to finish three shots behind host Miami (866, +2) at the par-72, 6,150-yard Biltmore Golf Course.
Oklahoma has finished second-or-better in four of its seven tournaments this season.
“It was a close round all day today,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. “In team golf, every shot counts until the end. Our attitudes and energy were great, but Miami made a few more putts than us down the stretch.”
Four Sooners in the lineup finished in the top 17 of the individual standings, led by senior Rylee Pedigo, who tied for second place with a career-low-tying tournament score of 211 (-5). The finish tied a career best for Pedigo, who claimed second at the 2016 Clover Cup.
Fellow senior Valerie Tanguay, who competed in the event as an individual, shared second place after firing six birdies on Wednesday to shoot a career-best 67 (-5) and finishing at 211 (-5). The second place showing is the first top-five finish of Tanguay’s career.
The senior duo finished one shot off of medalist Elizabeth Bose of Virginia Tech (210, -6).
Senior Hannah Wood climbed 15 spots after shooting a 70 (-2) in her final round of play, finishing in 13th place overall. Wood recorded a three-day score of 220 with the help of an eagle on the 18th hole in her final round. The finish marks her 20th career top-10 finish.
Junior Julienne Soo shot75 and finished one stroke behind Wood with a tournament score of 221. Freshman Kaitlin Milligan tied for 17th with a 223. Senior Ana Ruiz tied for 36th at 228.
Oklahoma has two tournaments remaining in the regular season, starting with the Clover Cup in Mesa, Ariz., from March 16 to 18. The Sooners have finished in the top four in the past three Clover Cups, including a second-place showing last season.
