Reband fires 64, Sooners one back in Pullman

Junior Garett Reband shares the lead after firing a 6-under 64 during Monday’s opening round at the NCAA Pullman Regional at the par-70, 7,232-yard Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash. The Sooners hold second place after 18 holes, carding a 270 (-10) during the first round.

All five OU players fired rounds in the 60s as Reband matched his career-low and put together is tied for the second-best 18-hole score in OU history during the postseason. OU’s round of 270 is the best mark in school history in NCAA competition and is tied for the third-lowest round in program records.

“It’s always good to have everyone in the game and under par,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “We gave up quite a few coming down the stretch, otherwise it was a solid first round. (Garett) Reband did a great job toting us today. We need to see everyone get there tomorrow.”

No. 20 Texas A&M leads the Sooners by one shot after posting a 269. No. 8 Georgia Tech holds third place at 271, followed by BYU at 272. Michigan State rounds out the top five after posting a 273.

The regional is one of six 54-hole preliminary events for the NCAA Championship. The low five teams and low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championship, scheduled for May 24-29 at The Blessing Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.

Reband carded eight birdies during Monday’s action and shared the individual lead with BYU’s Carson Lundell and Texas A&M’s Chandler Phillips after one round. Reband opened the day by playing the front nine at 7-under par and finished with his seventh round in the 60s this season.

Senior Blaine Hale shares 19th place at 68, four shots back of the individual lead. In his fourth appearance for the Sooners at a NCAA Regional, Hale picked up seven birdies during the opening round.
Senior Brad Dalke, redshirt junior Quade Cummins and freshman Patrick Welch all are tied for 23rd place through 18 holes at 69. Cummins finished strong with back-to-back birdies on holes No. 15 and 16 to claim his 10th round in the 60s this season.

Dalke finished with four birdies on his scorecard, while Welch played consistently in his NCAA postseason debut by picking up a pair of birdies on the front nine.

Tuesday’s second round will begin at 9:30 a.m. CT on hole No. 1 for the Sooners. OU will be paired with Texas A&M and Georgia Tech.
