ShaeBug Scarberry of Purcell was defeated 5 and 4 by USC golfer Gabriela Ruffels of Australia in the first round of match play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss.

Scarberry jumped out to an early lead with a birdie on the second hole, but then bogeyed five of her next six holes to give Ruffels a 3 up lead. Scarberry cut the lead to 3 with a birdie on 10, but bogeys on 11 and 13 did her in as Ruffels won with just one birdie, that on the par-3 12th hole that was matched by Scarberry.

Ruffels, the winner of the North-South Amateur, is regarded as one of the top players in the Pac-10 Conference.
